Diluent and Thinner

What is the difference between diluents and thinners?

Paints are often diluted to a suitable consistency prior to application. Here, technical considerations are just as important as economic ones. If one merely wants to reduce the paint’s viscosity, e.g. for spray application, one uses a thinner, which is usually a mixture of solvents.

One of the components of such solvent blends can be a substance which, although not it self a solvent for the resin, makes a major contribution together with the other components in achieving dilution ofthe paint. Such substances are usually referred to as diluents and their use enables the cost of a formulation to be greatly reduced.
