Unstable Knifing Fillers

Unstable Knifing Fillers

Could you suggest reasons why our knifing filler, containing 77 % calcium carbonate as filler, cures prematurely in the drum ?

The cause of your problem would appear to be ion release t by the calcium carbonate filler, something one must always reckon with if contaminants have not been removed before use. Here, trivalent cations are specially critical and one should check these specially. e.g. aluminium ions. Another possible cause could be a change in the pH value.

The effectiveness of the emulsifiers used to stabilise the system will then be reduced, which can lead to precipitation and the formation of filler-dispersion aggregates. The problem could be solved by using less sensitive stabilisers and one could also use a buffer substance to adjust the pH value.
