Can you suggest suitable alternatives for lead and cobalt-based driers ?
The search for alternatives for lead an cobalt-based dries is motivated ecological as well as health considerations. Investigations being carried out by the Paint Research Association in England are still in progress, but have already shown that alternative metals such as zirconium or calcium will produce dries with a totally different mechanism.
Manganese, zinc, cerium, barium nd vanadium compounds could also be used as driers. Multi metal driers also look promising, these being based on combinations of the above mentioned metals.
Finally, aluminium driers can be used as non-toxicmaterials but in this case a special binder will have to be used.
