Corrosion protection for aluminium

Corrosion protection for aluminium

Can you suggest a paint suitable for protecting aluminium surfaces from corrosion ?

Generaly speaking, aluminium surfaces are relatively resistant to corrosion, especially when anodised. If, however, such surfaces are exposed to very corrosive media, several coats of a suitable paint are essential. Provided the surface has been thoroughly cleaned and primed, the anti-corrosive paint will show good adhesion. Suitable paints include one-pack systems based on vinyl copolymer resins as well as special alkyd paints, particularly those containing melamine resins.

Two-pack primers which can be used includethose based on acrylate/isocynate or epoxy resins. To achieve enhanced corrosion protectionone can use active pigments such as zinc, strontium and barium chromates. It is inadvisable to use graphite or lead-based pigments since these may interfere with the paint.

Any type of top coat can be used if conditions are not too severe, but under strongly corrosive conditions it will be necessary to apply three or even four coats of anti-corrosion paint.
