Casein pigment pastes for treating leather

ls it possible to replace casein by a synthetic resin which ca be stoved at 70 - 80 °C or which can be cured with formaldehyde, produces a high gloss finish and whose viscosity will remain unchanged by enzyme processes? Such a resin should be compatible with casein solution at a 15 % resin concentration and a pH value of 9.

This question embodies an exceptional number of conditions. Nonetheless, it should be possible to solve this problem with a series of tests, because there are quite a number of synthetic resins which look promising. These include powdered polyvinyl alcohol and vinyl acetate/vinyl alcohol copolymers, polyvinyl pyrrolidone and polyvinyl pyrrolidone/vinyl alcohol, as well as polymethyl vinyl ether/ maleic anhydride. Polysaccharides, though not synthetic, would also be useful in this respect.
