Ethyl Silicate Binders

Ethyl Silicate Binders

How does one fomiulate ethyl silicate binders for making one- and two-pack, self—curing, inorganic zinc-rich paints?

The chemistry of silicid acid esters, i.e. silicates such as ethyl silicate, methyl silicate and other high molecular silicates ist extremely complex because of their reactions, which are difficult to control. It is possible to formulate one- and two-pack primers and top coats, as well as stoving enamels, which are noted for their excellent high temperature resistance, sim1ilar to that of silicones,i.e. polysiloxanes.

The main use of ethyl silicate is in the production of anti-corrosive, zinc-rich paints. Here, the choice of zinc dust and other additives is most important. The dried film should have a minimum zinc content of 95 %.
