Synthetic Resins for Furniture Lacquers

Synthetic Resins for Furniture Lacquers

Which types of synthetic resins are nowadays being used for making furniture lacquers? Are solvent-based furniture lacquers likely to be replaced in the foreseeable future by watersoluble systems?

The type of synthetic resin to be used will depend on the particular furniture lacquer system. ln nitrocellulose lacquers, for example, one normally uses alkyd resins with an oil content of around 40 %, usually based on non—drying synthetic fatty acids. Besides nitrocellulose lacquers - whose market share in the fumiture held is 55 % — one also uses acid-curing one—pack lacquers whose market share is around l0 %.
Polyurethane vamishes account for about 20 %
These are available in two versions:
a) formulated with alkyd resins containing hydroxyl groups (Desmophen component)
b) fomiulated with polyacrylate resins containing hydroxyl groups (PU varnishes).

A small proportion of about 6 % is accounted for by UV-curing, unsaturated polyester and acrylic resins. Now to your second question. At the moment, about 90 % of all furniture varnishes are solvent based. Although it is possible that, in the next few years, the proportion of water-thinnablc lacquers will increase along side UV—curing systems, they are hardly likely to displace solvent-based systems.
