Avoiding Gel Formation

Avoiding Gel Formation

How can we reverse undesirable gel formation or at least prevent it?

If the gel state is reached, increases in molar mass occur rapidly. Initiators are small molecular modules (mono- or oligomers), the mobility of which is limited by the gel. ln general, it is then too late to take correcting steps, at least without noticeable reductions in quality. There are various preventive measures. The reaction can be influenced by heat. At low temperatures the reaction rate is reduced.

From the time of delivery, the paint containers should be adequately cooled. Care should be taken to achieve maximum product purity since even minor impurities can interfere with the normal reaction. Reaction of the lower molecular weight species is however less affected. It is also important that any solvent used should have practically no effect on the reactions on account of good solvation.
