What is the best way of rapidly and reliably determining the oil content of an alkyd resin?
The answer is simple infra-red spectroscopy may be used to determine not only the composition of an alkyd resin but also that of a blend with other binders and surface coating resins. The method will usually also provide information on the type of oil used. If there is a mixture of different alkyd resins however, things will become difficult. In that case one could perhaps try using thin-layer and gas chromatography.
